Lumin supported and contributed to the construction of a sustainable classroom in the School Colony No. 160 of Iporá in the Department of Tacuarembó, Uruguay with 18mm plywood panels as well as by-products derived from the manufacture of panels. This institution accepts children from rural schools with a play/recreational program, in combination with expanded classroom activities focusing on nature, showing that learning to work, and live in harmony together contributes to a better society. Currently the colony receives one rural school per week with current facilities of 300 M2. The intention is to expand the facilities to 600 M2 that will double the number of children who can visit it. The architectural design has a semi-buried structure with an embankment and a green roof on its south, with east and west faces blending in with the landscape. There is a glazed front to the north with a greenhouse and a view of the lagoon. The construction began in November 2020 and took 30 days, through-out which students and volunteers acquired knowledge of architecture and sustainable construction. The construction was based on the principles of passive thermal comfort, rainwater collection, indoor botanical cells for plant or food production, and renewable energy production. In addition, it is primarily based on natural and/or recycled materials and is mostly sourced locally. Lumin donated different products, such as 18 mm plywood panels produced at our Tacuarembó plywood mill, as well as with polynes and chips that are by-products derived from the panel manufacturing process. The vaulted ceilings and all the wood used in the construction of the classroom are visible and innovative. For Lumin it was a great experience and the company is very grateful for the opportunity to use our products in such a building, where the focus was sustainable construction.
